USE A COMMA TO SEPARATE:

  • words, phrases and clauses.  eg. After the flood, I left home.
  • items in a list                      eg. milk,bread,butter,eggs.
  • two or more describing words  eg. the large, fat frog.
  • a short phrase at the beginning of a sentence. eg. At dawn, he woke up.
  • inserted clauses.                 eg. Bill, who was tired, fell asleep quickly.
  • the name of someone who is being addressed. eg. "Mum, I'm hungry."
  • text at a natural pause in a sentence. eg. "I'm not your slave," she replied.
