English is a compulsory subject for all NSW High School students in all years because it builds foundations in reading, writing and responding for all other subjects.
Through responding to and composing a wide range of texts and through the close study of texts, students will develop knowledge, understanding and skills in order to communicate through speaking, listening, reading, writing, viewing and representing; use language to shape and make meaning according to purpose, audience and context; think in ways that are imaginative, creative, interpretive and critical and express themselves and their relationships with others and their world.
As students learn and reflect on their learning through their study of English, they will adapt their individual and collaborative skills with increasing independence and effectiveness.
The study of English enables students to recognise and use a diversity of approaches and texts to meet the growing array of literacy demands, including higher-order social, aesthetic and cultural literacy. This study is designed to promote a sound knowledge of the structure and function of the English language and to develop effective English communication skills.
