Both the Open Boys and Open Girls football teams played The Rivers Schools (a combination of Lismore, Kyogle and Richmond River high Schools) in the Northern Rivers zone final on Monday 15th of May.
We were playing in these games as a result of our Round 2 wins against Alstonville where the girls won 6 – 2 and the boys on the back of a brilliant goalkeeping display by Josh Lane by 1 – 0.
The games were held on the Liverpool Academy synthetic fields at East Lismore. It was an opportunity for the players to play on this all-weather facility and the girls got to play in the cooler part of the day and the boys were subjected to some very hot conditions.
The girls' team started off very well and in the 13th minute Sarah Skinner settled our nerves with her usual calmness and scored a goal. From there and against a very well trained and drilled side, we hung on to finally win by that single goal. It would be impossible to single any one player out as all players gave 100% and showed what real grit and determination can do.
The boys however, were not as fortunate and conceded a goal in the first 20 minutes of the game. From there the first half for our side was quite disjointed. After a half time team talk to focus on the way they played rather than the result. The team looked to be, on many occasions during the second half, the superior of the two teams. The Rivers school, like Maclean in the girls hung on for a 1 – 0 win. Unfortunately, this ends the involvement of the boys in the state knockout and Mr. Dinham as their coach this year.
As well, it is the final game for our Year 12 boys who have been outstanding this year. Good luck with your football and the HSC exams.
