MACLEAN HIGH NOW IN FINAL 4
Maclean High School Open Girls Football team again showed their willingness and determination to win their Quarter Final State knockout game against Tomaree High School from the strong Hunter region. This means Maclean High is now one of 4 schools left from 315 schools that entered the state knockout. Tomaree comes with the reputation of a high scoring team looking at their past results.
The game was played at Barry Watts Oval, Maclean and the field and facilities were in perfect condition thanks to Maclean FC and CV council.
The game started briskly with both teams creating chances in the first minute or so. In the second minute of play Maclean were awarded a free kick about 25 meters out from the Tomaree goal. Sarah Skinner precisely hammered the ball across the front of the wall set by Tomaree and into the corner of the net for the first goal. After a couple of chances for both sides to score, including one thwarted by the reliable Shanyn Hammond, Tomaree broke through the defence to have a one on one with our keeper and they scored in the tenth minute.
Three scoring efforts around the 20 minute mark for Maclean were either blocked or missed and a concern about those chances were amplified when Tomaree broke clearly though and was about to shoot but a great saving tackle by Shanyn again stopped their attempt. So, the game went to half time as a 1 – 1 draw.
The second half begun with Tomaree having 2 corners in the first two minutes. Then at the 8th minute mark Tomaree had a clear chance to score but fortunately for Maclean the shot from 8 meters out was over the crossbar. Tomaree continued to press and another chance came their way by Lizzy Hyne made a great reflex save from 2 meters out to save the shot and the day.
From then on Maclean found their mojo and started to create problems for the Tomaree team. Chances were created and shots missed or great saves made in the 20th, 22nd and 28th minute as Maclean continued to dominate this section of the game.
With Sarah Skinner pushed forward into a more attacking role, Kayli Ohlmus pushed through a ball for Sarah to run onto to score in the 31st minute to give Maclean a 2 – 1 lead. Tomaree were not a team to lie down and they fought back and put pressure on the Maclean goal. They almost scored in the 33rd minute of play and that gave all the spectators, players and coach some ‘heart attack' moments.
Fortunately for Maclean they didn't score and they went on to win 2 – 1 I the Quarter Final of the state knockout.
They now travel to Sydney to play against either Vincentia High or Albury High on Wednesday 16th of August. This game will be played at Football NSW headquarters at Glenwood. The game will be played on a synthetic pitch. The girls were ecstatic about the support from the community and school with a very health crowd gathered at Barry Watts Oval.
The school would also like to acknowledge, CV council, Maclean FC and especially, Kate Skinner for their support through the state knockout.
