The Schools Spectacular 2017 was staged at QUDOS Bank Arena at Olympic Park in Sydney on Friday 24th and Saturday 25th November. Mrs Alexandra Hickey and Ms Elaine Essex accompanied 22 students from Years 7-11 to participate in the combined secondary choir. The choir was comprised of approximately 2700 students. MHS sent 4 sopranos, 14 altos and 4 baritones. For many of the students this was their first insight into the production of a stage show if this magnitude and proved to be an eye opener whilst for many it was another opportunity to be part of this exciting show.
We have put in the hard yards with a few months of lunchtime rehearsals and once we hit the ground in Sydney, everyone was excited to learn the dance moves to go with the songs aka choralography. A highlight of the show was definitely the Polynesian Ensemble, which shared the culture of the Islander peoples of Australia encompassing Torres Strait Islander, Tongan and Samoan students. This item provided a fantastic platform for us to sing the beautiful music from the movie Moana as well as learning traditional Haka moves and language. Another great inclusion in this year's show was the first ever Drama Ensemble, a truly spectacular item to watch.
Everyone enjoyed this experience immensely and watching the featured performers when we were not involved was a fantastic chance to see the talent in our NSW Public Schools. The atmosphere inside the arena was amazing to experience and something the students will remember for a very long time to come. In our lunch break we even got to see the two phases of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Flame while relaxing in Kathy Freeman Park.
You can watch the show on Channel 7 this Saturday December 16 at 7pm to see if you can pick out any of us in the choir.
