Applications for student travel 2016

From 2 November 2015, a new online SSTS application process is being introduced for schools within the Opal network, coinciding with the introduction of the School Opal card. Schools outside the Opal network should continue to process the existing blue SSTS application forms and send them to the appropriate transport operators. Most parents, guardians and students won't need to apply for a school travel pass for 2016 if they have already been given a school student travel pass for the current year. 2016 school funding allocations

All NSW public schools are currently being advised of their 2016 Resource Allocation Model (RAM) funding. RAM distributes funding based on individual needs of students and schools, and gives schools greater flexibility to make financial decisions. The way schools use their RAM funding will vary based on local needs. Some support will be for the entire school, and some will be for particular groups of students or individual students. Rural Fire Cadets 2015 Maclean High School enjoyed an excellent Rural Fire Cadets mentoring program in terms 2 and 3 this year. The cadet program allowed students to understand fire and develop skills in the prevention of fires. The program this year included 32 Cadets, local Rural Fire Service volunteers, and a mentor group, the latter including junior members of local Rural Fire Service stations. Yr 7 & 8 Premier's Debating

Year 7/8 Premier's Debating Challenge The Maclean High School Year 7 Debating team is in winning form. They remain undefeated after five debates as a team. On the 10 thof June the four members of the team attended Grafton High School to compete in the first two rounds of the Premier's Debating Challenge. The first round had topics surrounding ‘The Media'. Maclean won the coin flip and argued on the affirmative side of the debate "The government should filter the internet." Maclean High School Ski Trip 2015 In Week 4, Term 3, 66 students and 4 staff made the long bus journey to Jindabyne for the annual Year 11 ski trip. All were keen as the snow had been falling and conditions looked to be the best in years. After 16 hours on the 2 busses we finally arrived and were put through ski hire, or should I say snowboard hire. Most of the students chose to snowboard this year with only a small handful choosing to stand on 2 skis. A strong wind on the first night at the Sport and Rec centre did not bode well for... North Coast Girls Rugby League Gala Day Maclean High School sent a dedicated and talented team to play in the North Coast Gala Day at Coffs Harbour on Tuesday 23rdJune. Maclean High had won the Trish Douglas Shield previously to qualify for the North Coast Title. In the first game Maclean High played Melville High winning 12 points to 8 with Dolly Daley and Judy Vesper scoring tries. St Pauls College was the second opponent for Maclean High. MHS Public Speaking Success!

MACLEAN HIGH WINS AT REGIONAL PUBLIC SPEAKING FINAL Maclean High School has won this year's North Coast Local Final in the "Plain English Speaking Award" placing both first and second in the event. Speakers, invited from all schools across the region, were required to present a 7 minute prepared speech followed by a 3 minute impromptu and were scored based on the content, structure and delivery of their speech. 2015 Central Australia Excursion Fund Raiser

The Central Australia Excursion 2015 is scheduled from 7-24thSeptember. In order to make this excursion as successful as it has been since 2008, a huge amount of organisation, planning and purchasing must occur. To enable the students to do as much as possible for the given excursion price, the school, where possible, will organise a few fund raising activities. Congratulations Libby!

Congratulations to Elizabeth Rose of Year 10 who sat the Sydney University's Science Gifted and Talented Discovery Program Qualifying Examination, achieving a percentile of 97.2. This placed Elizabeth in the top 3% of students from NSW, ACT and Qld, who sat the exam. Only students in the top 12% were offered places in the program. The exam was very challenging, requiring students to draw on their knowledge of science as well as to think critically. ANZAC Day Commemoration 2015

To mark the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli Campaign in World War One, one of the school's most important axioms, respect, was displayed in a dignified manner by every MHS student. Before the Commemoration, Maclean High School embarked on a poppy making project, bringing together students, staff and community members. As one of the first flowers to grow at the Gallipoli site after the destruction of war, the poppy has become a symbol of remembrance. MHS in the MEDIA

Term 2 has started on a busy note and there are many excursions and activities already planned. The school body commemorated ANZAC day last Friday and in excess of 1600 red poppies were made by students, staff and community members. As part of the commemoration, students were able to place a poppy under the flag pole to commemorate the many lives lost and the many other armed forces that are still fighting for the freedom we have in Australia today. Maclean High School Triumphs at the CHS Rowing Championships! A contingent of twenty-three rowers travelled to Taree on Friday 13March to compete in the Combined High School rowing competition held over the course of the weekend. Maclean High School recently hosted a University Information Evening as part of the Stellar Program. The Stellar Program is an initiative of the Clarence Valley Industry Education Forum funded by the Commonwealth Government's Higher Education Participation and Partnerships Program to improve the participation rates of students from communities under-represented in higher education.
