Maclean High School vs Inverell High School

The Maclean High School Open boy's cricket team travelled to Inverell to compete in the NSWCHS Knockout. After defeating Bellingen the Maclean boys were through to the final 8 teams in the state. After travelling over on Wednesday evening the boys hit the nets early on Thursday morning to get into the groove. The facilities at Varley Oval in Inverell were fantastic, including a newly built clubhouse with change rooms, electronic scoreboard, grandstand seating and a magnificent oval. Recent rain had made the outfield lush and long which would mean runs were at a premium.

Jared Moran lost the toss and was asked to field first, but the result turned into a boom as Harrison Nicholson and Zac Honeybrook made early inroads into the Inverell top order. Wickets tumbled regularly with Nicholson taking 3 with fantastic line and length bowling, whilst he was aided brilliantly by Honeybrook bowling with real menace from the other end. Inverell stuttered to be 4 for 17 after the first spells of bowling with good fielding and great bowling giving the boys every chance.

A strong partnership then formed for the home side which limped their score on past the 100 mark. Some more tidy bowling from Dylan Causley and Jacob McMahon kept the wickets falling and we eventually bowled Inverell out for 124.

Maclean were full of confidence going out to bat and negotiated some quick bowling early; however we lost 2  wickets in succession with both openers (Jared Moran and Lachlan Johnson) falling cheaply. It was left to Zac Honeybrook (43) and Harrison Nicholson (12) to add some stability to the score. Both batsmen found the runs hard to come by, and hard work was the order of the day. Both boys got through to the drinks break with us 2 for 52.

After the interval things started to go awry after Harrison was dismissed stumped after charging down the wicket to a leg spinner. That was the beginning of the end as Inverell gained the upper hand taking regular wickets to bowl Maclean out for 86. A valiant effort in a hard fought game.

I am super proud of the team playing so well. It is an incredible feat making the final 8 teams in NSW. I would also like to thank the parents who took time off work to bring their sons out to Inverell. Also, another huge thank you to Ken Moran for scoring, motivating and doing everything on the periphery to make my job so much easier.
