MHS Open Touch Report
On Monday 21st March the Open Boys and Girls Touch team travelled to Goonellabah to be part of the Combined High School Knockout Competition and the Northern Rivers Zone Trials. Upon arrival both teams were straight out on the paddock with the Boys contesting Alstonville and the Girls Kyogle. These were great games for our students to get to know each others games and display the prowess and skill level of our teams. With each team comfortably winning by 4 touchdowns it placed them in a good position for the next games.
The girls next encounter was against a very fit Alstonville team. With only 8 girls available on the day, due to a number of factors, our girls battled wearily through the game but unfortunately the fitness of the Alstonville girls proved too much for the Maclean side.
The boys game was closely contested with the newly combined "The Rivers" school. Both teams displayed some excellent skills in both attack and defence and at the final hooter a draw meant the winner was still undecided. This proceeded to a "dropoff" to gain a result so the winning team could progress to the next round. After 3 minutes in extra time the teams were down to 4 on 4 and The Rivers School dived over the line for a concluding try.
Despite being out of the knockout from this point the students displayed some fantastic skills and many of our students were looked at for selections into the Northern Rivers Teams. Congratulations to Eathan Kapeen, Nathan Hollis, Shane Dennis, Christian Whittaker and Breanna McFarlane who all have gained selection to represent the Northern Rivers Zone teams at Goonellabah on the 9th April early next term. We wish you all the best for selection at the next level.
