Year 11 Drama

Cultural Literacy Research Project

This project is an introductory activity for Preliminary Drama students. 

 

This will involve intensive work but will also hopefully inspire drama students about Australian Theatre and fill in the gaps in their knowledge. For many students it will be new information. The idea is to encourage you to be more culturally literate and to be better prepared for the HSC course which expects you to have knowledge and understanding about Australian and other theatre. 

This task is to be completed and submitted electronically.

DUE DATE: Friday, Week 2, Term 2.

 

Critically Studying

Through this research students will develop knowledge and understanding about and skills in:

·         recognising the place and function of drama and theatre in communities and societies, past and present

The student:

P3.1    critically appraises and evaluates, both orally and in writing, personal performances and the performances of others

P3.2    understands the variety of influences that have impacted upon drama and theatre performance styles, structures and techniques

 

and students will develop values and attitudes about:

·         drama and theatre as a community activity, a profession and an industry

The student:

P3.4    appreciates the contribution that drama and theatre make to Australian and other societies by raising awareness and expressing ideas about issues of interest

 

Section 1 Sydney Theatre Company

  2. Sign up for STC news
  3. Request a 2013 brochure
  4. Look at their Twitter and Facebook pages and join up if you would like to
  5. List the mainstage productions for 2013 and read the blurb about each one
  6. What is the artistic vision of the company?
  7. Where is the Wharf Theatre? Find the address and download the map. Include a photo of the building.
  8. What is the current play being staged by STC?
  9. Read the SMH and Australian reviews of this production and include a highlighted copy of one of them.
  10. Choose one play from the 2013 season that you would like to see and complete the following:

·         Name the play and author

·         List the director and designers and other members of the creative team

·         Include the advertising image for the production

·         List the actors in the production

·         What is the production about?

·         Why would you want to see it?

·         How much would you need to pay to see it?

·         Go through the process of booking two tickets to a performance – obviously stopping before paying.

·          Look at what else STC Education has to offer.

  7. Where is the Belvoir St Theatre? Find the address and download the map. Include a photo of the building.
  8. What is the current play being staged by Company B?
  9. Read the SMH and Australian reviews of this production and include a highlighted copy of one of them.
  10. Choose one play from the 2013 season that you would like to see and complete the following:

·         List the director and designers and other members of the creative team

Read the details about the Ambassador Program and apply to be an ambassador if you are interested in 2013.  100 specially selected Year 11 and 12 students will enter a unique year-long relationship with La Boite. As La Boite Ambassadors they'll gain special insights into the workings of a professional theatre company. They'll attend La Boite shows for free, meet the creative teams, be offered special workshops, and have access to specially discounted tickets for friends and family.  Applications close on 15th February.

Collect a copy of this week's Metro (Friday SMH) and Spectrum (Saturday SMH) – try to read these each week. The entertainment sections of the Sunday Telegraph and the Sun Herald are also worth looking at, as are the Courier Mail and the Sunday Mail.
